Uno strappetto al dorso; precise sottolineature a matita corredate da segnetti e postille a margine del testo; buona copia da studio, perfettamente fruibile -- Aristotle's Poetics perhaps because of its brilliant ideas has led people to distort, condemn, or neglect many Greek dramas not governed by its patterns or its concentration on plot. Examining anew all the forty-five extant pre-Aristotelian dramas, Mr. Coolidge makes some startling observations. The tragedies are of four different and highly developed types. In one, some trouble is pictured as beginning; there is a tone of lament; and great emphasis is placed on long choral passages. In a second, a sharp reversal of action is pictured; a character is punished; and the story is presented primarily through action and action-related dialogue. In a third, there is a formal debate about the issues; a strong character restores order; and the drama ends with a union of previously opposed parties. In a fourth, this restoration of order is presented in a loose, ironic structure which implies that heroism and order are unreal. The four types suggest a sequence exhibiting repeated, intensifying purgations and a movement from disorder to order, then back to comic disorder, in a pattern like that of the formal trilogy and the comic satyr play which followed it. The comedies employ a similar interplay of disorder and order and build their laughter upon the ensuing reversal of conventional roles. This study offers a new view of Greek drama as a unified cultural entity while presenting interpretations of individual works and helping explain the artistry of many underrated or neglected masterpieces.
