Tenue brunitura ai margini della sovraccoperta, peraltro copia in condizioni eccellenti -- Claude Lorrain was not only one of the world's great painters but was also a brilliant and influential printmaker. Yet his output of etchings has never been satisfactorily catalogued. This book by Lino Mannocci is the first catalogue raisonne of the etchings of Claude Lorrain. Because Claude created many states of his etchings, and his copperplates were reprinted and reworked several times during the centuries following his death, both the amateur and expert collector have been unable to assess the precise nature of the prints in their possession. Early important proofs have lain unrecognized, while worthless nineteenth-century reworked reprints have been treasured by museums or private collectors as unique impressions. The damage that this has caused to any serious assessment of Claude Lorrain as a printmaker is obvious. The book begins with several chapters that deal with the life of Claude and with background information on printmaking of the era. The catalogue then provides accurate descriptions and clear illustrations of all the different states that Claude himself created - including more than a dozen previously unpublished early states - as well as all the reprints and alterations to which the copperplates were subjected by later hands. The book is an indispensable resource for any scholar, collector, dealer, or lover of prints.
