Although a major figure in the history of seventeenth-century art, he has not had the attention he deserves, and only in recent years has the research necessary to identify his drawings been undertaken. The exhibition of Ribera's graphic work shown at Princeton and Harvard in 1973 is the first to be devoted solely to this artist. To accompany the exhibition, Jonathan Brown has compiled in one volume a complete catalogue raisonné of Ribera's prints that should become the standard reference work on the subject, and a catalogue of 38 of his drawings. In an introductory essay to each catalogue he defines the evolution of Ribera's style and technique in the medium, and explores the role that this played in the artist's creative processes. The section on drawings, which is built on the researches of Walter Vitzthum, supplies the first comprehensive study of Ribera as a draftsman. Here at last Ribera's graphic oeuvre is generously illustrated and examined in scholarly detail.
